Read 180 Class Syllabus

Course Outline

Daily lesson focus on reading intervention, and include tools for learning the concepts and ideas that are integrated in this reading intervention program.  Each day begins with introductory whole group instruction, followed by 3 small group rotations, ending with whole group wrap up discussion. 

Each portion of the Read 180 intervention program is twenty minutes, and the students are taught and expected to use their time efficiently.  Instructional design fosters student skill development in active listening, pair share, independent seat work, and life skill development.  Read 180 helps students to access core curriculum and California’s common core standards, because students are exposed to language in multiple formats: technology; writing; reading based on student lexile.  Instructional strategies will present material with a multi-modal approach (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).  The classroom, learning environment will additionally help students to develop higher order thinking abilities (e.g. prediction, analysis and evaluation) in a safe nurturing environment.  Students additionally progress in the online reading, comprehension, and writing program.

Testing Methods

Students will be given multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, and performance task assessments (written, oral, formative evaluation).


Students will be assigned at least one project. 


Students will be given the necessary materials to complete their assignments.

Grading Policy

R and L book – This category is worth 10% of the students’ overall grade. Students will be given the trimester to complete these assignments.

Computer Rotation – This category is worth 5% of the students’ overall grade.

Independent Reading – This category is worth 5% of the students’ overall grade.

Quiz - This category is worth 10% of the students’ overall grade.

Essays/Tests/Projects/Oral Presentations – This category is worth 70% of the students’ overall grade.

Students must complete missing assignments or projects within two weeks and before the end of the trimester. If the student does not make up the missing assessments by the end of this two -period the teacher will use best professional judgment to assign a grade or leave an INC (incomplete).

Grading for one section of the Read 180 program is based upon the student’s completion of their reading logs and engagement and progression through the online program.  Grading for the second portion of the program is based on their active participation during whole and small group instruction as well as their grades on specific assignments.

A (90 – 100 %) Outstanding Achievement              4.0 grade points

B (80-89%) Above Average Achievement               3.0 grade points

C (70-79%) Average Achievement                           2.0 grade points

D (60-69%) Below Average Achievement               1.0 grade points

F (0-59%) Little or No Achievement                       0 grade points

I – Incomplete                                                           0 grade points

M – Missing Assignment                                         0 grade points


Citizenship Grades

Citizenship grades align with district-wide student expectations: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety.  The citizenship grade is a letter grade according to their interactions with their peers, staff, and their environment. Students, who earn an “N” or “U”, will not be qualified for free dress on the monthly free dress day.

Step 3: Mediation with student and parent (email or phone)

Step 4: Office Referral & parent conference (face to face with parent/guardian, teacher, and student).
